To practice at home, here is the poem we will be using:
🐰 Bunny & the Hole Shoe-Tying Rhyme 🐰
Cross the laces, make an X,
Pull them tight so they don’t flex.
Make one bunny, hold him tight,
Wrap the lace around just right.
Bunny dives into the hole—
Pull him out, and off you go!
Some teaching points I focused on:
- If they cross under with their Right string to do the ‘x’ , the right hand should make the first bunny ear (same situation if they use the left)
- Keep hold of both strings close to the shoes.
- When making the first bunny ear, use the other hand to help make the loop by grabbing it an inch away from the ‘x’ and folding the rest of the string towards the ‘x’.
- Holding the first bunny ear tight to the ‘x’, pinching with only a pincer grasp (thumb and pointer finger)
- Loop the other string around on the far side of the bunny ear, then wraps close to you and over the thumb.
- The thumb will move out of the way to see the hole.
- Push through the hole and grab both ‘ears’
- Pull tight against the ‘x’ to make sure it stays secure.
**I used a lot less words than this and only noted things where certain children struggled – they don’t all need ALL the tips
